However, she's found most of her success as a professional poker player. After watching the World Series of Poker on TV, she fell in love with the game and began playing online. She then appeared on the TV show, Shark Cage, where she competed against leading players.

Kumar is a fashion designer who studied in Delhi and New York. She started her business back in the 1960s, producing bridal wear by hand in Kolkata. In the decades since, she has gradually grown her business which now has branches throughout India in addition to ones in Paris and New York.

Although Kumar has managed to grow to become an influential player of trends in Paris and New York, her business continues to stick to its roots. Throughout the wedding season in India, the company’s website is inundated with people looking for Ritu Kumar dresses.

The company now also offers many other products, including accessories like wallets, bags and scarves; and home furnishings like cushions, quilts, candles, and tableware.

In recognition of her contributions to India and fashion, Kumar has been awarded the Padma Shri award from the government and the Achievement Award at the L’Oréal Paris Femina Women’s Awards.
